In Murakami’s “Hard-boiled Wonderland and the End of the World” — when a person’s shadow is forfeited they release all sources of fear. But doing so is also giving up memory, soul, creation, and spirit. Can life go on separately from shadow? What becomes of shadow when life doesn’t recall its existence?

In order to dream, feel, live… one cannot lose shadow.
